The holidays can be difficult for someone with diabetes with all the sweets that are baked, especially during the Christmas season. If you have diabetes, below are some tips on keeping your blood sugar in check during the holidays so you can have a great time with your family and friends without worrying about your blood sugar levels.

Keep in Control

Start controlling your blood sugar levels one week before Thanksgiving and Christmas. This will allow you to enjoy a few sweet treats because your sugars will be already balanced at a good level. If you do eat some sweets, eat them in moderation and never ask for a second portion. Once the meal is over, do not continue eating even if all those good treats are still available to you.

Use Probiotics

Research has shown that probiotics are beneficial for someone that has Type 1 diabetes. Probiotics convert starches and sugars in your gut into fatty acids.

There are many foods you can add to your diet that have probiotics in them, such as sour kraut, yogurt, soft cheeses, sour pickles, miso soup, and sourdough bread. If you are hosting the holiday meal, add some of these foods to the menu. 

Use Sugar Alternatives

There are many sugar alternatives on the market today. If you are hosting the meal, use these types of sugar in the desserts. People will likely not even notice these desserts taste any different. If you like your fruit sweet, you can sprinkle sugar alternatives on top of it and use this type of sugar in your drinks. For recipes that call for sugar, use applesauce, yogurt or honey. If you like your morning coffee with sweetener, you can use one of the sugar alternatives or put a few drops of honey in your coffee.

Watch Your Alcohol

Drinking a moderate amount of alcohol may lower your blood sugar. To help with this, make sure you eat something before you take a drink. Some types of alcohol have large amounts of sugars. You can then do some research to find the nutritional content of the alcohol.
