Buying larger quantities of coffee at a time can be a good way to save money. However, unless you have a big family of coffee drinkers, it will probably take you a while to go through two pounds of coffee. How do you store the extra beans so they don't go stale or lose flavor by the time you use them? Here are a few tips.
Don't open the coffee until you're ready to use it.
Coffee companies usually put a lot of time and effort into choosing the right packaging for their coffee. They choose bags that are well-sealed and don't let the flavor escape. So, as long as you don't open the original bag the coffee came in, it should stay fresh for quite a while. When you receive your 2 pound bag of coffee, don't open it until you're ready to use it for the first time. If you were to instead open it and empty it into a canister a few days before you actually made coffee, that would be a few more days of the coffee moving towards staleness.
Put a portion in another container.
After you open the coffee beans, put one portion in a container that you're going to store longer-term. Put another portion in a container that you're going to open and use beans from on a regular basis. This way, only part of the beans will be exposed to oxygen with repeated opening and closing of the container. The others will stay sealed and protected until you're ready to start using them.
Store them in the fridge.
If it is at all humid and hot where you live, then move your extra coffee beans to the fridge for storage. Cooler temperatures and lower humidity help keep the flavors and aromas locked inside the coffee beans. Some people even store their coffee beans in the freezer with good results. Just make sure you don't forget they are in there.
Don't open and close containers too much.
Each time you open a container, you let in air, which contributes to the coffee beans going stale. So, only open your stored coffee when you absolutely must. Avoid letting others smell your coffee, and don't open the containers just to take a whiff yourself.
